How do I choose the right travel insurance?
It can be hard spending time and money on something you don't expect to need - but if anything goes wrong on your travels, you will thank your lucky stars that you did. Here's how to select the right travel insurance policy for your needs.
1. Look at the prices of some different travel insurance products, comparing the cover and checking what is excluded.
2. When your full policy arrives, take time to check whether it is really suited to your needs. If, on checking the small print, it turns out not to be, you can claim a refund and look elsewhere.
3. If you will be travelling more than once in the year, a multi-trip policy might be a good buy, and it will cover weekend and any other spontaneous trips as well.
4. Look carefully at the cost and cover if you are offered travel insurance packaged along with your holiday purchase. Some operators keep holiday price margins low and hike up insurance premiums. You might be better off buying a separate policy.
5. Don't forget to take your insurance documents with you, and carry the helpline number at all times.
6. Check the emergency medical cover. It's so unlikely that you will need it, but proper cover will reduce the trauma if you do.
